The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Moqhaka Municipality has formally written to the council and the municipal manager, Portia Tshabalala, calling for the urgent restoration of the non-functional streetlights in Ward 10.
Currently, many streets remain in complete darkness after sunset. This creates unsafe conditions for early-morning and late-evening commuters, facilitating criminal activity.
Residents live in fear, and their concerns cannot be ignored any longer. The matter has already been raised with the ward councillors, yet little has been done.
The DA is also deeply concerned about matriculants who attend extra evening classes and are forced to travel home in unsafe, poorly lit conditions. The Municipality must fast-track the repair process to protect both learners and the broader community.
Maintaining public infrastructure, such as streetlights, is a core responsibility of local government and should not be neglected.
The DA’s action plan to address this crisis includes:
• Submit formal written questions to the council regarding delays in repairs.
• Repeatedly reporting every non-functional streetlight.
• Conducting regular oversight visits across Ward 10.
• Hosting community information tables to engage residents and gather evidence.
• Escalating the matter to the council to ensure accountability.
Residents of Ward 10 are entitled to safe, properly illuminated streets. The DA will not rest until this issue is resolved and the Municipality fulfils its duty to the people
