The Democratic Alliance (DA) has successfully pushed the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality to take disciplinary action against officials implicated in unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure amounting to R7.6 million.
This follows a Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) report, based on the Auditor-General’s findings, which revealed millions wasted in the 2023/24 financial year. The DA insisted that the money cannot simply be written off without consequence.
The council has now unanimously adopted the DA’s recommendation that:
- A formal disciplinary process must be instituted against those responsible;
- Any write-off of the expenditure will only proceed once clear evidence of consequence management is presented.
Section 32 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) makes officials personally liable for wasteful spending, and the DA will ensure this principle is upheld.
This decision strengthens accountability, protects community resources, and sends a clear message that financial mismanagement will not be tolerated. The DA will continue to monitor the implementation of the action plan to promote clean governance in the municipality.
