The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to the MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport (CSRT) urging him to urgently address the dangerous conditions of the R717 road between Trompsburg and Edenburg. This 40km stretch has deteriorated into a hazard, filled with many deep potholes that endanger motorists on a daily basis. The DA will push for the deployment of the provincial pothole eradication team as a matter of urgency.

This road is not only essential for local residents but also serves as a critical alternative route when accidents or congestion close sections of the N1. Instead of offering relief, however, its current state adds further danger and disruption. The collapse of road infrastructure between towns does not only pose a serios risk to lives but also cripples local economic activity, as poor road conditions cut off access between towns and discourage investment.

The DA has already submitted official questions to the MEC of CSRT, pressing for clarity on why the road has been neglected for so long and demanding timelines for urgent repair. Without accountability and proper planning, communities are left stranded with roads that continue to deteriorate year after year.

Residents of Kopanong deserve safe road infrastructure. The DA will continue to fight for quality roads in all nine towns of Kopanong to ensure safe travel, stimulate economic opportunities, and strengthen social development.
