The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matjhabeng Local Municipality recently visited the Thuthuzela Care Centre at Bongani Hospital, Welkom, to commemorate Women’s Day on 08 August. This vital organisation offers critical support to both male and female survivors of rape and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across the Lejweleputswa District.
As the only centre of its kind in the district, Thuthuzela Care Centre serves a vast area, providing essential care to victims from Boshof to Bothaville. On average, the centre assists between 50-80 individuals each month, though it is acknowledged that these numbers represent only a fraction of the true prevalence of GBV in the community, as many cases go unreported.
The scourge of violence within our community affects individuals of all ages and genders, highlighting the urgent need for such services. However, the centre faces significant challenges, including:
- Transportation difficulties: Limited police vehicles often delay the timely transport of patients.
- Follow-up appointments: The distance many victims must travel complicates regular follow-up care.
- Staff shortages: A lack of Qualified Forensic Nurses places additional strain on the dedicated nursing staff.
- Maintenance issues: Occasional disruptions to hot water supply due to the centre’s location on Bongani Hospital property and its maintenance under Lejweleputswa District.
Despite these obstacles, the resilient women leading the Thuthuzela Care Centre continue to provide unwavering support to those in need. The DA commends their efforts and is committed to advocating for better resources and support. Additionally, we will submit a report to the Provincial Legislature to ensure that the Departments of Health and Social Development support organisations working to improve the lives of residents.
During the visit, the DA team distributed care packages containing basic toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap, aiming to restore a sense of dignity to patients during their recovery process.
