The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Xhariep District notes with deep concern the ongoing inability of the Xhariep District Municipality to attract and sustain meaningful tourism across the district.

Despite the region’s rich cultural heritage, unique natural landscapes, and historical significance, the municipality has consistently neglected its responsibility to develop tourism as a driver of economic growth and job creation.

Tourism is a proven catalyst for local development, yet in Xhariep:

  • No coherent tourism strategy exists. The municipality has failed to produce or implement a credible plan to market the district’s attractions.
  • Infrastructure remains inadequate. Roads, signage, and basic amenities are in disrepair, making it difficult for visitors to access and enjoy the district’s offerings.
  • Heritage sites are neglected. Historical landmarks and cultural assets that could draw both domestic and international visitors are left without maintenance or promotion.
  • Local communities are excluded. There has been no meaningful engagement with residents, entrepreneurs, or farmers to build inclusive tourism initiatives that benefit the district’s people.

This failure has direct consequences: lost revenue, missed investment opportunities, and continued unemployment in a district that desperately needs economic upliftment. While other regions in the Free State have leveraged tourism to stimulate growth, Xhariep remains stagnant due to poor leadership and a lack of vision.

The DA calls on the Xhariep District Municipality to:

  1. Develop and publish a comprehensive tourism development plan with clear timelines and measurable outcomes.
  2. Prioritise infrastructure upgrades to ensure accessibility and safety for visitors.
  3. Partner with local communities, businesses, and provincial tourism bodies to create sustainable tourism initiatives.
  4. Actively market the district’s unique attractions to both national and international audiences.

Tourism is not a luxury; it is an essential economic lifeline. The continued neglect of this sector is a betrayal of the district’s potential and its people.

We will continue to hold the municipality accountable until meaningful action is taken to unlock the tourism opportunities that Xhariep deserves.
