The Democratic Alliance (DA) has successfully prompted the Nala Municipality to begin urgent repairs to the blocked stormwater system affecting the local school sports grounds.

For more than two years, the DA has been reporting this issue to the municipality and raising it repeatedly in committee meetings, yet no meaningful action has been taken. Despite constant assurances that the matter would be addressed, the municipality consistently failed to provide a timeline or begin work.

The malfunctioning stormwater system has caused severe flooding on the school’s sports grounds whenever it rains. As a result, learners have been unable to use the fields for sport and physical education activities, depriving them of essential recreational opportunities and affecting the school’s sporting calendar. The flooding also poses a potential safety risk to both learners and teachers.

The ongoing neglect of Nala’s infrastructure has become a serious concern, with stormwater systems, roads, and public facilities deteriorating due to poor maintenance. This not only undermines service delivery but also affects the quality of life and development opportunities for residents, particularly young people.

Following the DA’s intervention and continuous oversight, municipal workers finally commenced repairs on the stormwater system on 5 November 2025.

The DA will closely monitor the process to ensure that the work is completed correctly and that sustainable maintenance plans are implemented to prevent future flooding.

We remain committed to holding the Nala Municipality accountable for its failure to maintain public infrastructure and to ensuring that residents and learners have access to safe and functional community facilities.
