The Democratic Alliance (DA) will take urgent action to address the growing illegal dumping crisis in Mangaung by escalating the matter to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) if the municipality continues to fail in its duty. Communities are suffering the health and environmental consequences of the ANC-led municipality’s inability to provide reliable refuse collection.

The rampant illegal dumping in our streets and open spaces highlights the municipality’s failure, under ANC leadership, to collect refuse regularly. Despite numerous reports to the Head of Department for Community Services, the situation remains dire.

These illegal dumps have become literal breeding grounds for pests, diseases, pollution, and social decay.

It’s unacceptable that our communities are forced to live amidst the filth and squalor caused by the municipality’s ineptitude.

The DA therefore calls on the municipality to:

  1. Urgently restore regular and reliable refuse collection services.
  2. Implement a clear plan for the clean-up of existing illegal dumping hotspots.
  3. Implement effective measures to prevent illegal dumping.
  4. Holding accountable those responsible for refuse collection failures.

Our communities deserve better than broken promises of “a better life for all” and failing service delivery.

We remain committed to fighting for clean, safe, and dignified neighbourhoods for all residents.
