The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s Finance Accounts Committee (MPAC) conducted a public participation meeting in Thaba Nchu on Friday, 19 July 2024, to gather feedback on the 2022/2023 annual performance report. Unfortunately, none of the Heads of Departments (HOD) attended this crucial meeting, which resulted in significant dissatisfaction among residents and stakeholders.
Numerous questions posed by attendees could not be addressed due to the absence of the HODs. As a result, the meeting was adjourned by the Chairperson of MPAC, who expressed disappointment over the lack of essential personnel. It was announced that the meeting would be rescheduled to a future date when the HODs can be present.
It is deeply concerning that despite being informed and allegedly instructed by the City Manager, Sello More, to attend, none of the HODs were in attendance. This situation not only reflects poorly on the commitment of these officials but also raises serious questions regarding the municipality’s management of resources. Organising and advertising a meeting that could not be effectively concluded due to absent officials may potentially lead to perceptions of wasteful expenditure, which is unacceptable, particularly in a financially constrained municipality.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) reiterates its commitment to transparency and accountability in governance. We will hold the MMM accountable to ensure that future engagements are conducted with the requisite participation from all relevant parties.
