The Democratic Alliance is concerned over the slow progress of the Caledon Raw Water Abstraction Project, following an oversight visit to the Caledon Water Extraction Point in Dihlabeng. We have written to the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Saki Mokoena, to establish a completion date, the cost of the project to date and to put pressure on the ANC-led government to get this project done.
The project is intended to address the chronic water shortages affecting communities in Fouriesburg and Mashaeng. However, despite the significant investment in this critical infrastructure, the project remains incomplete, while residents continue to struggle with unreliable water supply. Official project information identifies Mashaeng as one of the key communities that stands to benefit from the project.
The ongoing delays are leaving Mashaeng residents without reliable water, with some areas receiving water only in the early hours. The approaching rainy season could further delay construction and the restoration of a reliable water supply.
With local government elections approaching, residents deserve a municipality that delivers, manages infrastructure effectively, and ensures reliable access to water. Only a DA government can get Dihlabeng working for all.
