The Free State CoGTA has seconded Monyane Sefantsi to be the Acting Municipal Manager (MM) for Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality until a permanent MM can be appointed. The post of MM has been vacant since 2022 despite being advertised on three occasions.

Sefantsi is no stranger to controversy. He was accused of not having the minimum requirements when he was appointed the MM in Nketoana Local Municipality. He is also accused of corruption relating to the Winnie Mandela Museum, where he is alleged to have paid a company without following proper procedures. This doesn’t inspire confidence at all, and Sefantsi’s credibility is in doubt.

MaP needs stable and reliable leadership, and the sooner the municipality appoints a permanent MM, the better it will be for the residents.

The DA will, therefore, monitor the process of recruiting a new, permanent Municipal Manager in the coming months, as the council took a resolution to start this process again. We will also seek clarity on Sefantsi’s qualifications and the alleged corruption case.

This municipality must work for the people and not be treated as space to reward ANC cadres. We call on the residents of Maluti-A-Phofung to rally behind the DA and help us rescue this municipality and the Free State by voting DA on 29 May.
