The Democratic Alliance (DA) conducted an unannounced site inspection at the Kroonstad wastewater treatment plant in Moqhaka Local Municipality, seeking to assess the progress of the refurbishment of the old plant. However, what we found was alarming.

Upon closer examination, it became evident that the plant was not operational at all. The screw conveyors, aerators, and all machinery stood still, with no treatment of raw sewage occurring. This raises serious questions, especially considering the substantial investment of over R10 million and the intervention of the former Deputy President Mabuza.

Under the leadership of Executive Mayor Mokatsane, our sewerage plants have collapsed, with no accountability in sight. It is unacceptable that there is no consequence management for such failures.

It is imperative that those responsible for this negligence face investigation for dereliction of duty. We call for immediate intervention by the MEC and for decisive steps to remove the weak leadership that consistently fails the Moqhaka community.

With every inspection, more systematic failures in infrastructure emerge, all linked to the failed leadership of Mayor Mokatsane. While progress is evident in areas where contractors are active, the lack of maintenance poses a looming threat.

A DA government will prioritise the establishment of an effective, professional, and merit-based public service system, dedicated to delivering quality services to all. We urge all residents to vote in the 2024 National and Provincial Government elections on 29 May, to bring about the change our communities desperately need.
