During a public meeting in Letsemeng Local Municipality, with stakeholders held by Koffiefontein Diamond Mine on 08 May 2024, it became evident that the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) seeks to distance itself from the sale of a local mine. This has sparked considerable concern as the process has become mired in blame-shifting rather than accountability.
The disrespect toward residents, who have posed crucial questions demanding answers, is unacceptable. It is imperative for the DMRE to acknowledge the concerns of the residents.
Koffiefontein residents are apprehensive that the company responsible for the Jagersfontein disaster is now acquiring the mine. They seek assurance that Koffiefontein will not suffer a similar fate under the new ownership, which could jeopardize lives, health, the environment, and underground water quality. Questions linger regarding Petra Diamonds’ decision to sell to Star Gems and the allocation of mining and water licenses. The issue of accountability in case of mishaps remains unresolved.
Residents demand assurance that Petra Diamonds has vetted the buyer thoroughly to ensure the continued operation of the mine, rather than risking flooding that could devastate the community already grappling with economic challenges.
The Democratic Alliance commits to prioritising the DMRE’s engagement with Koffiefontein residents regarding the mine sale. We will also advocate for the development and implementation of a disaster management plan to address potential water level rises and environmental pollution.
It is evident that political agendas and ineffective government departments, influenced by cadre deployment, are hindering progress. This underscores the urgency of voting the ANC out on 29 May 2024.
