The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mangaung Metro Municipality conducted an oversight of Balaclava Trust School in Ward 43, Thaba Nchu. The school had been abandoned apparently due to insufficient student enrolment.
With the number of learners falling below 50, the Department of Education relocated all students from closed schools to nearby hostels in Mangaung. This resulted in the closure of numerous schools in rural areas, leaving their buildings unsecured and susceptible to vandalism. In the face of high unemployment, opportunists exploit this vulnerability to pilfer items for sale.
While the relocation benefits learners, concerns arise regarding the neglected infrastructure. The Department of Education must prioritise the security and maintenance of these vacant school buildings to prevent further deterioration. Additionally, community involvement and partnerships may be necessary to find sustainable solutions for repurposing these structures in a way that benefits the local area.
The DA recognises that prioritising systemic improvements in education, especially in the first term, is crucial. Such improvements should yield positive impacts without requiring excessive additional funds. The ANC’s disregard for the neglected school is evident, in contrast, the DA-run Western Cape exemplifies good governance by constructing the Saxonsea School in just 65 days through the Rapid School Build programme.
