The recent court judgment regarding the appointment of Municipal Manager Teboho Maine, challenged by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) due to material deficiencies, has raised significant concerns. Maine, appointed on 10 January 2024, saw his appointment set aside by the labour court, mandating an immediate halt to his duties in Letsemeng.

What compounds the issue is the conspicuous silence from the ANC in Letsemeng Local Municipality, notably Mayor Bonolo Mocwaledi, who has failed to communicate this crucial court ruling to the council or the public. Of particular concern is the operational state of the municipality, now lacking an accountable officer and Section 56 managers, all of whom were dismissed for their unlawful tenure.

The DA will address a formal inquiry to Council Speaker Xolani Mthukwane, seeking clarity on the ANC’s plans to restore stability within the municipality. Furthermore, the DA commits to vigilant oversight of the situation in Letsemeng, advocating for transparency on issues that impact service delivery to the community.
