The Clarens Transfer Station, a crucial waste management facility in the heart of the Free State, has become a persistent source of concern for the community. Despite its intended purpose as a temporary holding area for waste, the site has transformed into an overflowing landfill, posing significant risks to public health and the environment. Please see pictures here, here, here and here.

The accumulation of garbage at the Clarens Transfer Station not only creates an unsightly landscape but also an increase in disease-carrying flies and other pests. The presence of disease-carrying flies and other pests is rampant, exacerbated by the overwhelming stench emanating from the waste. Furthermore, the garbage becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and pathogens, especially after rainfall, further endangering public health.

For years, the community has voiced their concerns and demanded effective solutions to address the problem. The Clarens Transfer Station is just one aspect of the larger challenges faced by the Dihlabeng Municipality. It is imperative that the Dihlabeng Municipality takes immediate action to enhance waste management practices in the area, a good starting point would be appointing appropriately skilled personnel to manage waste effectively. There is also a need for crucial infrastructure improvements, including expanding the municipality’s fleet and implementing proper vehicle maintenance protocols.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will be writing a letter to the Municipal Manager, MMC of Community Services, and the Manager of Waste Services, through our Shadow MMC of Community Services. We will emphasize the urgent need for action, especially as we are currently engaged in the budget process, where these crucial issues must be addressed.

The community deserves a clean and healthy environment, and we firmly believe that with appropriate actions and allocation of resources, this goal can be achieved.

The well-being and quality of life of the community are at stake. It is incumbent upon the Dihlabeng Municipality to demonstrate its commitment to addressing this pressing issue, ensuring the effective management of waste and creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for all residents. Together, we can make a positive difference and bring about lasting change.
