ANC ditches MoNC to attend provincial conference

The DA in Maluti-a-Phofung (MaP) is disturbed by the ANC council members’ lack of regard for the people. The Maluti-a-Phofung council ultimately reached a quorum on January 20th, 2023, to hear the ANC-sponsored Motion of No Confidence (MoNC) against the mayor, speaker, and chief whip. Unfortunately, the ANC councillors were attending their provincial conference instead of tending to the needs of the community. The motions thus lapsed.

On 4 November 2022, the ANC in the municipality put forward a MoNC against the Mayor, Speaker, and Chief Whip. What then followed was a struggle by the council to have it tabled. Two council sittings could not reach a quorum. Political infighting had taken centre stage, as councillors from the MaP-16 coalition and some ANC members made sure that they don’t attend the council. This has a negative impact on service delivery in a municipality that is already struggling, as no other issues could be discussed in the council before the MONC was resolved.

The actions of the ANC are a slap in the face of the residents of Maluti-a-Phofung, and time and resources were wasted for both the municipality and the residents. The abuse of municipal resources should be rejected with the contempt it deserves.

The DA will continue monitoring and advocating for the rule of law and good governance to take centre stage in the administration of Maluti-a-Phofung, and we will guard and denounce any actions of abuse and maladministration by members of this council.
