The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State is deeply saddened by the tragic death of our Metsimaholo Caucus Leader, Michael Thulani Mbana, who lost his life in a shooting last night.

Thulani joined the DA in 2017 and dedicated himself to political activism, community service and building the party’s grassroots structures. As Caucus Leader, through election campaigns and by-elections, and his work as a councillor and MMC for Spatial Planning and Human Settlements while the DA was in government in Metsimaholo, he remained committed to representing the people of Metsimaholo and ensuring their voices were heard.

His passing is a devastating loss to the DA and the community he served so tirelessly. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

The Free State Provincial SAPS Commissioner, Lieutenant General Solly Lesia, informed us shortly after the shooting that they have a team investigating this incident. We trust the investigation will establish the motives and bring those responsible to justice.

The DA appreciates the messages of condolences from MEC Ketso Makhume on behalf of the African National Congress and Jan van Niekerk of the Freedom Front Plus.

Thulani will be remembered as a dedicated public servant and a champion of his community.
