– Taxi operators raise permit and compliance concerns.

– DA commits to safer, better-maintained roads.

– Stronger action needed against illegal operators.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will continue to engage with taxi operators and advocate for safer roads, fair permit processes, and stronger enforcement against illegal taxi operations in Maluti-a-Phofung. Through ongoing engagement and oversight, the DA aims to address concerns raised by the taxi industry while promoting commuter safety and a fair operating environment for law-abiding operators.

The DA in Maluti-a-Phofung met with Taxi Operators in Setsing, Phuthaditjhaba, with me, the DA Maluti-A-Phofung Constituency Head, and DA Deputy Chairperson in Free State Province, Jafta Mokoena, MPL, to discuss challenges facing the taxi industry and to listen to their concerns.

Taxi operators raised concerns about vehicles operating without the necessary permits and documentation, expressing concern about the impact on law-abiding operators and commuter safety. They also sought clarity on how a DA-led government in Maluti-a-Phofung would address these challenges.

A DA government would prioritise the maintenance and upgrading of municipal roads to ensure taxi operators can conduct business on safe, drivable roads. We would work to ensure that operating permits and documentation are issued fairly and transparently to deserving operators.

The DA also supports stronger enforcement measures against persistent lawbreakers who operate illegally and endanger the lives of commuters and other road users. Effective law enforcement is essential to creating a safe and fair transport sector.

While the regulation of taxi permits falls under provincial government, local government is responsible for maintaining roads and infrastructure within its jurisdiction. The DA remains committed to improving service delivery and creating an environment where taxi operators can earn a living while providing safe and reliable transport services to residents.

The DA is working for all residents, including taxi drivers, and recognises the vital role they play in the local economy and daily lives of our communities.
