The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matjhabeng notes with serious concern the continued unrest in Phomolong over the Middelpunt Solar Project, particularly the dissatisfaction with the 60/40% labour allocation. This stems from one-sided decisions by the ANC leadership, made without first consulting residents.

While we fully acknowledge and understand the frustration and concerns raised by residents, the DA cannot and will not condone any form of illegal protest, incitement to violence, damage to infrastructure, or actions that prevent residents from going to work or children from attending school.

Such actions are not only unlawful but ultimately undermine the very community they seek to protect.

The DA firmly believes that the only sustainable path forward is through constructive engagement. We encourage ongoing dialogue between the community, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, and the contractor to ensure that concerns are addressed in a fair, transparent, and lawful manner.

This project must be protected. The Middelpunt Solar Project represents a valuable opportunity to bring much-needed employment and economic activity to the area. Continued disruptions place the contractor under significant pressure, resulting in financial losses and project delays. Should instability persist, there is a real risk that the contractor may be forced to reconsider its position, with severe consequences for job creation and future investment in the community.

We therefore strongly urge all residents to attend the upcoming public participation meetings. These platforms are intended to provide clarity, facilitate meaningful engagement, and ensure that the community’s voices are heard directly by decision-makers.

The DA remains committed to supporting the community in seeking fair outcomes while upholding the rule of law and protecting opportunities for growth and development.
