The Democratic Alliance (DA) will formally petition the Provincial Roads Department and request an urgent site inspection to ensure the immediate grading and repair of the severely deteriorated 25 km gravel road connecting the R701 to the S332 between Bethulie and Maletswai.
The DA calls for urgent intervention from the relevant provincial roads authorities to address the alarming condition of this critical route. The road services daily bread deliveries from Maletswai to Bethulie and surrounding communities and is relied upon by farmers transporting goods, livestock and essential supplies. It has now reached a state of near impassability, placing livelihoods, local commerce and food distribution at serious risk. If left unattended, further deterioration will disrupt supply chains, increase vehicle maintenance costs, and isolate rural communities who depend on this route for economic survival.
The DA is further concerned that the entrance to the Tussen die Riviere Nature Reserve, a major regional tourism asset, lies along this same road. The current condition of the route threatens visitor access, undermines tourism revenue and damages the broader economic potential of the area. Poor road infrastructure sends a negative message to investors and tourists alike, directly affecting small businesses and employment opportunities linked to the tourism sector.
Despite repeated concerns raised by residents, farmers and local businesses, no meaningful action has been taken by the responsible authorities. Communities cannot continue to bear the consequences of government inaction, which erodes economic growth, compromises safety and weakens public confidence in service delivery.
The DA remains committed to advocating for safe, reliable road infrastructure that supports economic activity, tourism development and the dignity of all residents. We will continue to exercise oversight and ensure that the necessary repairs are prioritised without further delay.
