The Democratic Alliance (DA) will formally escalate the deteriorating condition of Utopia Cemetery in Bethlehem, and other cemeteries across Dihlabeng, to the Director of Community Services and the Municipal Manager, demanding an immediate maintenance plan with clear timelines to restore dignity and proper upkeep to all burial sites.

The DA is deeply disappointed by the deplorable state of these cemeteries, where loved ones are laid to rest. Graves are overgrown with long grass and dense bushes, with some completely obscured from view. Vandalism continues unabated, even in areas where security personnel are reportedly present. This ongoing neglect reflects a profound lack of respect for the deceased and causes additional pain and distress to grieving families who expect their relatives’ resting places to be treated with care and dignity.

Despite the matter being raised repeatedly with the ANC-controlled municipality, no sustainable improvement has been achieved. At a recent Community Services meeting, it was indicated that weeds would be treated using drone technology. However, it is evident that only selected sections of the cemeteries are receiving attention, while many graves remain entirely neglected. Partial interventions fail to resolve the broader problem and instead reinforce perceptions of inconsistent and ineffective service delivery.

When cemeteries are allowed to fall into disrepair, it undermines community trust and erodes confidence in the municipality’s ability to fulfil even its most basic responsibilities. Ratepayers deserve properly maintained public spaces that honour those who have passed on.

The DA will continue to apply pressure to ensure accountability, proper maintenance, and dignified conditions in all cemeteries across Dihlabeng.
