The Democratic Alliance (DA) will formally write to the Kopanong municipality and Eskom to demand an urgent technical intervention, a detailed recovery plan with clear timelines, and consistent public communication to restore a stable and reliable electricity supply to Philippolis.

The DA in the Free State reiterates its serious concern over the ongoing and unacceptable electricity outages in Philippolis, which have now persisted for more than two weeks. Residents continue to endure an erratic electricity supply, with power restored only briefly before further failures occur. This instability has had severe consequences for households, businesses and the broader community.

Repeated outages have resulted in significant financial losses due to damaged appliances caused by power surges. Many families have been forced to discard spoiled food following prolonged interruptions, placing additional strain on households already facing economic hardship. Of grave concern is the impact on vulnerable residents who rely on electrically powered medical equipment, such as oxygen machines. An unreliable electricity supply places these individuals at serious risk and endangers their health and lives.

Electricity failures have also disrupted water supply, as pumps cannot operate without power. This has left many homes without running water, creating serious hygiene and sanitation challenges. In addition, cellular and communication towers have been affected, frequently leaving residents without signal and unable to contact emergency services or medical assistance when needed.

The continued electricity crisis is placing severe strain on local businesses, forcing closures during outages and resulting in financial losses and reduced income for employees. This undermines investor confidence and damages Philippolis’ reputation as a destination.

Residents and businesses deserve reliable access to electricity, water and communication services. The DA will continue to exercise oversight and apply pressure until this crisis is resolved as a matter of urgency.
