The Democratic Alliance (DA) will be writing to the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Saki Mokoena, regarding the severely deteriorating state of Metsimaholo’s electrical infrastructure.

Substations are being vandalised, cable theft is increasing, electrical faults are becoming more frequent, and essential maintenance is simply not being carried out.

Compounding the crisis, the appointed panel of service providers has not been paid since last year. This is due to purchase orders not being captured on the system and invoices that have gone missing, an administrative failure that has brought critical work to a standstill.

To make matters worse, municipal electricians do not have vehicles to perform their duties. For the past three weeks, the DA has raised this issue and formally requested that the municipality rent LDVs until the fleet is repaired and operational again.

In his budget speech, the Executive Mayor boasted that Metsimaholo was selected as one of only three municipalities nationwide to form part of the national government’s “Adopt a Municipality” programme.

Over the next 24 months, starting from July 2025, R1 billion was expected to be invested in infrastructure upgrades and repairs, yet nothing has been done, and no progress report has been tabled before the council on the funding and identified projects.

The DA in Metsimaholo will continue to fight tirelessly for the reliable service delivery that residents pay for and deserve.
