The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nketoana is concerned that over R12 million was allowed to go to waste due to negligence by officials responsible for the 11 boreholes drilled in Mamafubedu.

The boreholes were drilled to augment the community’s water supply. Those boreholes were completed in December 2024 and handed over to the municipality by the appointed service provider.

After handing over the project, the contractor notified the municipality that they would be withdrawing their on-site security, but the municipality did not provide any security after the handover. This led to extensive damage to all electrical equipment at all 11 boreholes. Transformers, cables, pumps, and switches were all vandalised and stolen.

The DA will request the Chairperson of the Technical Services Committee for a full, detailed report on this project from the Director of Technical Services. We will also call for an urgent committee meeting to deliberate on the way forward regarding this project.

Some parts of Mamafubedu, such as the Modise section, don’t get water, while the rest of the community and Petrus Steyn town are also suffering from consistent water cuts. This situation cannot continue unabated. Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

Local government in Nketoana is in a state of disaster, and only the DA can rescue our municipality. This can only happen if voters take charge of their destinies and vote for a prosperous future. We encourage voters to vote for change in the upcoming elections.
