The Democratic Alliance (DA) has opened a criminal case against the Metsimaholo Municipality for the ongoing sewage spills in Metsimaholo. Case number 95/08/2025 has been registered by DA Metsimaholo Constituency Head, Igor Scheurkogel, to hold the municipality accountable and to push for urgent action to restore essential infrastructure.
During a recent oversight visit in Ward 8 Coalbrook, the DA witnessed shocking scenes of sewerage flowing openly through the community. We were disheartened to witness the alarming number of sewage spills that the community and environment endure daily, leading to health risks and soil contamination.
This situation also violates the Constitutional Right to an environment that is not harmful to health or well-being, the Right to Dignity, and the Right to access adequate housing and healthcare, as well as a glaring indication of the municipality’s neglect and lack of maintenance of essential infrastructure.
The malfunctioning pump station has exacerbated these conditions, leaving the residents of CoalBrook to live in unacceptable circumstances. This neglect not only undermines the community’s dignity but also poses significant health risks to its residents.
We are committed to advocating for the restoration of dignity for the affected community.
We will hold the Metsimaholo Municipality accountable for its failures and push for immediate action to address the infrastructure issues that have led to this dire situation
