The R64 road from Krugersdrift Dam to Boshof has turned into a death trap for our commuters. What was once a vital route for workers, families, and learners has now become a stretch of destruction, riddled with potholes and neglected by those in power.
In just a few months, this road has claimed lives and shattered families. Last year, in November, a resident of Dealesville was killed only 10 kilometres outside town, heading to Bloemfontein. More recently, another father lost his life on the same stretch of road, leaving his children injured and traumatised.
These are not accidents; they are the direct result of the government’s failure to maintain safe roads.
How many more coffins must we bury before the provincial government acts? How many children must be left without parents because leaders have turned a blind eye to the suffering of rural communities? We cannot continue to accept excuses while blood is spilt on our roads.
The DA in Lejweleputswa demands:
- Immediate intervention and rehabilitation of the R64.
- A comprehensive plan for all district roads that are in a state of collapse.
- Accountability from the provincial Department of Roads & Transport for years of neglect that have turned our roads into graveyards.
Our people deserve dignity, safety, and justice. We will not be silent while lives are lost. The R64 is not just a road; it has become a symbol of government indifference. We say enough is enough!
