The DA in the Free State strongly condemns the alarming prevalence of Gender-Based Violence within our province. Recent tragic cases, like the three women who were killed in a single week in the Botshabelo area, underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive response to protect the lives and dignity of women, children, and the elderly in our communities.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to all families and loved ones who have suffered a loss due to this epidemic.
We have directed questions to the MEC for Social Development regarding the availability of shelters for GBVF victims in the Free State. A previous report by the Commission for Gender Equality highlighted the severe shortage of shelter beds for victims of GBV, urging the Department to assess the actual need versus their current capacity. Adequate shelters and safe spaces are crucial for providing immediate relief and safety to GBV victims.
The DA also urges the provincial government to address the root causes and socio-economic factors of GBV in our province and to implement proactive measures to prevent GBV, as well as support initiatives for victims. We echo the calls of residents for law enforcement agencies to swiftly bring perpetrators to justice. We further call for enhanced education in our schools, as well as the private and public sectors, on all forms of abuse.
By monitoring the provincial crime statistics rigorously, the DA will scrutinize the performance and efficacy of the relevant departments in combating GBV. We call upon the Premier and her administration to adopt a year-round strategy and zero-tolerance approach in addressing gender-based violence, ensuring sustained efforts to protect women, children, the elderly and other vulnerable groups in society.
