The Democratic Alliance (DA) notes the 2024 Governance Performance Index (GPI) report from Good Governance Africa (GGA), again ranked Mangaung as the worst-run Metro in South Africa.

The report clearly indicated that the least favourable categories out of six, were Leadership and Management.

This comes as no surprise as the DA on several occasions warned the ANC-run Metro regarding their weak political leadership. In addition, the DA has placed it on record several times that the Senior Management, after several years is still not in place.

This complete failure of leadership and management continued despite Provincial and National Intervention. Currently, the Political Leadership and Management of MMM think that there is no need for further intervention from other spheres of government to conduct their affairs.

Add to that the recent findings of the Auditor General (AG) and MMM’s own Audit Committee that there exists material uncertainty whether the Metro can continue as a going concern, over-time expenditure spiral out of control, debt collection should be intensified and portfolio of evidence supporting quarterly reports by Management is lacking.

It becomes evident that no sphere of ANC-led government, or this ANC-led Metro have the Political Leadership to turn MMM the worst-run Metro in South Africa around.

As expected the DA-run City of Cape Town performed the best once more on the 2024 GPI. Proving once more, where the DA governs, it governs well.

South African voters now have the power to turn the tide with this year’s National and Provincial Elections. The DA with their impeccable track record is therefore the only choice during the 2026 Local Government Elections to rescue MMM and the rest of South Africa.
