The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality conducted oversight of the Recycling Plant project in Thaba Nchu. This project, initiated in 2017 at a cost of R2 million, remains unfinished, rendering it impossible to hand over for operation.
When the Recycling Plant in Ward 43, Mothlatla, was initially introduced, it sparked a ray of hope among the residents, promising job opportunities. However, this hope quickly turned into a mere illusion. The project never materialized, and security measures were removed, leaving the place vulnerable to systematic vandalism. Today, all that remains of the once-promising project is a skeletal structure, a stark reminder of the small hope our community once held.
The consequences of this abandonment are painfully evident as we witness the gradual disappearance of everything, we once held dear. Thaba Nchu’s residents have endured significant losses. We mourn the loss of Eureka Reformed School, Poloko Hospital, which cared for mentally challenged patients, our children’s home, Thaba Nchu Sun, Naledi Sun, and so much more. These losses have led to the collapse of Thaba Nchu’s economy, resulting in widespread joblessness. The town now stands as a mere shadow of its former self, plagued by high unemployment rates, drug abuse, and alcoholism among the youth.
To address this dire situation, the DA will submit additional Rule 38 questions to the council to inquire about the actions that will be taken to hold those responsible for this stalled project accountable. The DA is unwavering in its commitment to bring about change across the country, and we implore all residents to register to vote in the National and Provincial Government 2024 elections. We must take the right steps to bring change to our beloved community and restore the dignity of Thaba Nchu.
