The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality has written to the Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport to immediately address the perilous conditions on the R26 road in Bethlehem, specifically at the entrances to Phekolong Hospital and the Bakenpark community.
The relocation of the Bakenpark Clinic to Phekolong Hospital has forced patients to navigate the bustling R26 road, posing a serious safety risk. Moreover, scholars commuting to Bethlehem Combined School and schools in Bohlokong are perilously crossing this busy road. Emergency response vehicles and other traffic entering the R26 from Phekolong Hospital and Bakenpark encounter considerable difficulties during peak traffic times.
Numerous streetlight poles have already been toppled by speeding motorists due to the absence of speed control measures on the road. Furthermore, road sign markings have disappeared where the R26 intersects with the R714 Warden road, severely impeding visibility during nighttime, rainy, and misty conditions. Addressing these hazardous road conditions will enhance safety for patients, scholars, and all commuters using the R26 road. It will significantly reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, and damage to property in the community.
We have formally requested immediate road painting in necessary areas and the implementation of traffic control measures near the entrances of Phekolong Hospital and Bakenpark. Additionally, we commit to following up with the Department through the Provincial Legislature to ensure that necessary measures are promptly taken. We will persist in holding the Government accountable for its legislative service delivery responsibilities.
