The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State Legislature is concerned about the Kopanong Local Municipality’s failure to manage its finances.

The Kopanong Local Municipality in the Xhariep District of the Free State Province has again failed to pay the salaries of its employees. This is the same Municipality that has an arrears of R5 000 000 on its Bloem Water account, a R4 808 000 arrears on the payment of its third party payments, and a R1 250 000 arrears payment on its Auditor General South Africa fees.

With all these arrear payments, to date, no one who has been held to account while residents of this Municipality remain without a consistent flow of water and workers are unable to provide for their families.

These arrears together with the Municipality’s inability to pay the salaries of its employees is proof that the Municipality had no money and is unable to manage its finances.

The Democratic Alliance in the Free State Legislature is committed to fighting against corruption and will continue to use the internal legislative processes to ensure that the Municipality management is held to account.
