The DA in Dihlabeng will write to the Director of Community Services to request an urgent oversight visit to the Bethlehem Showgrounds and a formal assessment of how this neglected municipal asset can be restored and used to generate revenue, attract visitors and support local businesses.
The Bethlehem Showgrounds are a clear example of what happens when municipal assets are allowed to decay under years of ANC governance. Buildings and sporting facilities are in disrepair, parking areas have been neglected, broken-down vehicles remain on the premises, and former exhibition halls are being used as accommodation.
But the problem goes beyond the Showgrounds. Across Dihlabeng, municipal assets represent opportunities for revenue generation, economic growth and job creation that are being lost because of poor management and neglect.
Assets must work, not decay.
The Bethlehem Showgrounds have the potential to become a productive economic and community hub once again. They can host agricultural shows, sporting and equestrian events, markets, festivals, concerts and exhibitions, attracting visitors and creating opportunities for local businesses.
Visitors attending these events would support restaurants, guesthouses, shops and other businesses, while a properly managed rental and events programme could generate additional revenue for the municipality.
The DA has a clear plan to systematically transform the Showgrounds from a neglected municipal property into a functional, productive and revenue-generating asset. We will advocate for partnerships with local businesses, agricultural organisations, sporting bodies and event organisers to ensure that the facility is used consistently and sustainably.
As part of this process, the DA will request a clear municipal action plan setting out what needs to be done to restore the Showgrounds, the costs involved, the potential revenue that can be generated and how the facility will be managed in future.
The ANC has shown what happens when municipal assets are neglected: facilities deteriorate, money is lost, and opportunities for economic growth and job creation disappear.
The DA believes municipal assets must create value for residents. We have a plan to put these assets back to work and use them to stimulate economic activity, attract visitors, support local businesses, and create job opportunities.
The local government elections on 4 November 2026 allow residents to change Dihlabeng’s direction.
The choice is clear: ANC neglect or the DA’s plan to make municipal assets work again. Vote DA on 4 November and let’s get Dihlabeng working.
