The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tswelopele Municipality welcomes the outcome of the Special Council Meeting held on Thursday, 2 July 2026. During this meeting, the Council unanimously decided to remove Cllr Kenalimang Rose Phukuntsi from the position of Mayor. This decision followed a motion of no confidence, tabled in accordance with the Standing Rules and Orders.
This was a necessary step towards restoring stability, accountability, and ethical governance in Tswelopele. The residents deserve leadership that upholds the rule of law, respects proper administrative processes, and prioritises service delivery above personal or political interests.
The motion, submitted on 30 June 2026, outlined several serious allegations against the Mayor. These allegations included the use of abusive language towards officials and councillors, interference in administrative processes, sidelining councillors in EPWP appointments, misleading Council about irregular committee meetings, and, most recently, the appointment of an Acting Municipal Manager whose contract had already been terminated by the MEC.
These matters brought the municipality into disrepute and, if left unaccounted for, threaten the Municipality’s ability to function effectively.
The Council further agreed that the former Mayor be placed on special leave pending the conclusion of the MPAC Committee’s investigations, which are expected to report back within 7 days. Cllr Mantso Radienyane was appointed Acting Mayor, as she serves on the current Executive Committee.
We remain committed to working constructively within Council to ensure that the municipality returns to effective functioning and that the community’s interests remain at the centre of all decisions.
