The Democratic Alliance (DA) will submit oversight questions to Mohokare Municipality and continue to hold the ANC-led administration accountable for its failure to provide basic services to residents of Extension 10 in Zastron. The DA will also pursue all available Council mechanisms to ensure that residents are connected to water and sanitation infrastructure and receive the dignified living conditions they were promised.
In 2021, the ANC-led Mohokare Municipality embarked on a new township, giving land to the residents of Zastron. The ANC promised RDP housing and fully serviced sites. Very few houses have been built, and most residents still live in informal housing.
It was nothing more than a vote-winning process before the previous local elections. While sewerage lines and water pipes were laid, none of the existing properties has been connected to these services. Residents need to walk long distances to get water, and some have reported using the surrounding bushes as toilets.
Not only is this a major health risk, but it is also a human rights disaster.
While the town of Zastron continues to suffer water shortages due to mismanagement of burst and leaking pipes, parts of the town are dealing with overflowing sewage in the streets, in gardens, and on impassable roads. The municipality made no provision to increase the basic infrastructure, which was already under extreme pressure before they declared the new extension.
Leading up to the local elections on 4 November 2026, the basically bankrupt ANC is telling voters that if re-elected, it will make good in the next 5 five years. Over the 30-plus years the ANC has run Mohokare Municipality, it has never achieved a clean audit. Basic service delivery has just gone from bad to worse year after year.
If the ANC is re-elected, we only see total collapse. People need a political party that can restore their pride and dignity and provide them and their families with a healthy, clean environment to live in. The only party to have done this in South Africa is the DA, and it has a track record to prove it.
The people of Extension 10 and Mohokare deserve better and are fed up with ANC lies and promises.
