The Democratic Alliance (DA) submitted a motion to the Speaker of Nala Local Municipality, in terms of Rule 29 of the Council’s Standing Rules and Orders, calling for urgent intervention to fix and secure open electrical boxes in and around Bothaville.
This action follows an oversight visit to the town, during which DA councillors identified multiple electrical boxes that had been left open for months.
DA councillors inspected the town and found that several electrical boxes have been left open and unsecured for an extended period, posing a significant risk to residents, particularly children and pedestrians.
The continued exposure of live electrical infrastructure endangers lives and undermines basic municipal safety obligations.
We therefore hereby resolve that:
- Council ensures that all exposed electrical boxes are urgently secured and properly closed.
- A full investigation should be conducted into why these electrical boxes were left open and unattended for such an extended period.
- It is determined whether there are cost implications relating to repairs or replacements, and whether proper installations were previously not completed.
- Nala responds to this motion by 29 May 2026, providing clear steps and timelines for remediation.
We urge the Nala Local Municipality to take immediate corrective action to repair or replace electrical boxes in the streets of Bothaville, thereby ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
Failure to address this issue exposes the community to preventable accidents and undermines public trust in service delivery.
