The Democratic Alliance (DA) will write to the Municipal Manager and Executive Mayor of Mohokare to demand an urgent, time-bound plan to connect Extension 6 in Rouxville to water and sewerage services, and will submit formal Council questions to ensure accountability for the decade-long failure.
Approximately ten years ago, two Mohokare councillors unlawfully allocated unserviced municipal land to residents in Rouxville, despite the municipality already struggling to maintain basic service delivery. No provision was made to upgrade infrastructure to accommodate the influx of households. The consequence is clear: today, residents of Extension 10 still lack access to running water and proper sanitation, and continue to rely on the bucket system, severely undermining their dignity and quality of life.
Ahead of every election, the ANC repeats promises to resolve this crisis, yet no meaningful progress has been made. In February 2026, the Mayor declared this the “year of service delivery” in Mohokare, but conditions have deteriorated further. The municipality is effectively bankrupt, with its bank account attached for a third time in a year, most recently by Eskom over a debt exceeding R90 million. This has a direct impact on residents, as it prevents the procurement of essentials such as water treatment chemicals and threatens the payment of municipal salaries.
It is unacceptable that, in modern South Africa, residents are denied basic human rights such as water and sanitation. The DA will continue to hold the ANC accountable and fight for dignified living conditions for all residents. Only capable governance can restore trust and deliver services to the people of Mohokare.
