The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Phumelela has formally engaged the South African Police Service in Vrede and the Office of the Mayor to ensure the strict enforcement of environmental by-laws and to curb the illegal destruction of trees.

This intervention responds to the growing, unregulated tree felling, which, if left unchecked, will strip Vrede of its natural canopy, leading to increased temperatures, soil degradation, and a diminished quality of life for residents.

Trees serve as a vital ecological asset for the town by providing essential shade, stabilising soil, and regulating local temperatures. Yet, the current rate of removal suggests that Vrede could soon face a future entirely devoid of its natural canopy.

This environmental crisis is compounded by the Phumelela Local Municipality’s failure to allocate any budgetary resources to tree-planting or reforestation initiatives.

This lack of investment ensures that any tree removed is a permanent loss to the town’s heritage, as there are currently no municipal programmes in place to restore the vegetation being destroyed. We maintain that a town without a functional green belt loses both its aesthetic dignity and its environmental resilience.

We seek to ensure that tree-cutting becomes a rationed, legally monitored activity, and that those who engage in illegal felling are held accountable. The party emphasises that while enforcement is a necessary deterrent, preserving the town’s ecosystem requires a unified approach from all administrative and security stakeholders.

To address the root of the problem, the DA is organising a public awareness meeting involving all relevant stakeholders and community members. The purpose of this gathering is to educate the public on the critical importance of Vrede’s trees and the legal processes required for their management.

During this meeting, the party will also table a formal proposal to submit a letter of demand to the municipality, calling for the immediate establishment of a dedicated budget for tree restoration to ensure that the environmental future of Vrede is protected for generations to come.
