The Democratic Alliance (DA) will submit formal oversight questions to the Dihlabeng Local Municipality and demand a clear, funded road maintenance plan for Clarens to prevent further deterioration of critical infrastructure that supports the town’s tourism economy. The DA will also continue to press the municipality to prioritise road repairs and ensure that infrastructure investment keeps pace with the economic activity that Clarens generates for the region.
The DA acknowledges the resounding success of the Clarens Craft Beer Festival held this past weekend. The event once again attracted visitors from across the Free State and beyond, creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the village. Local guesthouses and hotels reported strong occupancy, restaurants and coffee shops experienced increased foot traffic, and retailers benefited from the steady flow of festivalgoers. Events of this calibre play an important role in stimulating the local economy, supporting small businesses, creating temporary employment opportunities, and reinforcing Clarens’ reputation as a premier tourism destination.
However, this positive economic momentum stands in stark contrast to the deteriorating state of the roads in Clarens. The condition of many streets has become an embarrassment for a town that relies so heavily on tourism. Potholes, crumbling surfaces, and repeated temporary patchwork repairs undermine the very economic activity that local entrepreneurs work tirelessly to build.
When infrastructure fails, the consequences are felt directly by residents.Visitors experience frustration, vehicles are damaged, and the town risks long-term reputational harm that could ultimately threaten local jobs, businesses, and future tourism investment.
Clarens deserves a municipality that protects and strengthens the infrastructure that sustains its economy.
