The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes reports that the Free State Department of Education has commenced construction work at the Sandersville Combined School in Heilbron. This comes following pressure by the DA, calling for immediate action from the Department.

The DA received numerous complaints from residents regarding the condition of the school’s building. Due to the poor standard of the main building, learners were forced into broken mobile classrooms, faced inclement weather conditions at times, and often fell ill, resulting in missed schooling.

These conditions do not constitute a learning environment required for optimal learner development and fall short of what is required for a safe and supportive learning.

Leaners in Heilbron and other communities just like this deserve the same quality of education and infrastructure afforded to learners elsewhere in the province. The DA will continue to closely monitor the progress of this and other projects to ensure they are completed within the stipulated timelines and meet acceptable quality standards.
