The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matjhabeng welcomes the recent upgrades and improvements to infrastructure in Ward 12, Thabong. However, we remain deeply concerned about the lack of transparency surrounding the R29 million road project, which the Executive Mayor officially handed over.
The DA further notes that members of the public have expressed shock that a three-kilometre road could cost as much as R29 million.
It is apparent to any observer that this figure appears to be far higher per square metre than what one would reasonably expect.
According to media reports, the project created 44 local jobs and included the use of four SMMEs to boost community participation. While these outcomes are positive, questions remain about how this project was awarded and managed.
To ensure accountability, the DA has submitted formal questions in terms of Rule 52 of the Standard Rules and Orders to the Acting Municipal Manager.
We are specifically requesting:
- Proof of where and when the tender was advertised.
- Details of how many tenders were received and from which companies.
- The Bills of Quantities (BOQs) of all submissions.
- The BOQ of the successful bid.
- Details of which SMMEs benefited from the project.
Public funds, especially those from the Municipal Infrastructure Grant, must be used responsibly, and residents deserve complete clarity on whether value for money was achieved.
We will continue to play our role as a constructive opposition, welcoming progress where it benefits residents, while demanding transparency and accountability to protect the interests and purse of the community.
