The Democratic Alliance (DA) demands accountability from the Department of Roads and Transport for the ongoing failures on the R708 road project between Marquard and Clocolan. Despite repeated commitments, the project remains plagued by delays, shoddy workmanship, and a lack of visible progress.

Since the beginning of our oversight campaign, including visits on 28 and 30 July 2025, we have observed limited progress over the past several months.

During our most recent oversight on 22 August 2025, no work was occurring on site, with no personnel present and no progress on unrepaired sections, including a critical 10-kilometre stretch leading into Clocolan that remains in a dangerously deteriorated state.

We previously raised concerns about pothole repairs, which sank and became hazardous within days. Additionally, many workers appeared unproductive during site visits overseen by management, raising questions about the effectiveness of supervision and leadership.

These failures highlight mismanagement and poor oversight by the Department, which is ultimately responsible for ensuring that contracted work is completed to standard and on time. The continued deterioration of this road not only endangers motorists but also undermines economic and social activity in the region.

The DA will continue pressing the Department and contractor for full transparency on work schedules and proper delivery. Residents cannot be expected to tolerate wasted public funds and unsafe road conditions any longer.

The Department must urgently fix its failures and ensure that the R708 is rebuilt according to contract specifications.
