The Democratic Alliance welcomes the judgement in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court today, where Matjhabeng Municipality Executive Mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha was found guilty on charges of Assault and Crimen Injuria.

This judgement is not only a win for the Matjhabeng community, it also reinforces the principles of accountability and the rule of law, especially for politicians who believe they are above it.

Following an initial arrest, the suspended Mayor was released on a warning in March 2024 for allegedly slapping and swearing at one of his bodyguards. This incident happened at the Kutlwanong High School in Odendaalsrus. He was removed from the scene by his bodyguards when violence erupted.

After the incident, Tiisetso Mahlatse, the Provincial Secretary of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) emphasised that justice must prevail for the affected bodyguards. However, the then Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana expressed his full support for Khalipa, suggesting rather that some individuals are looking for the mayor’s downfall to access municipal resources. The Mayor was ultimately charged for his actions and was found guilty of those charges today. His actions reveal a lack of character and that he was never worthy of his position of leadership, especially because he attacked those who were meant to protect him.

The DA demands that Khalipa resign, alternatively that he be removed by his party in the interest of the residents of Matjhabeng. We will also consider a motion of no confidence should this not materialise. The DA will continue to advocate for the rights of Matjhabeng residents and strengthen our institutions that help uphold the rule of law and order.
