The Democratic Alliance (DA) is committed to holding the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality accountable for its failure to address the severe water crisis that has plagued its communities for years. Despite repeated interventions from provincial and national governments, no lasting solutions have been implemented. The DA, therefore, sought urgent intervention from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to address this crisis and advocate for the basic rights of the residents.

The SAHRC found that the ANC-led Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality ignored requests for meetings and failed to supply essential information needed for the commission’s investigation. This lack of response is not only unacceptable but shows a blatant disregard for the rights and dignity of the municipality’s residents.

The water crisis in Maluti-a-Phofung is largely a man-made disaster. With a staggering 70% of water lost due to leakages and outdated infrastructure, residents are paying the price for the municipality’s neglect. Tragically, an elderly gentleman recently lost his life while collecting water from a borehole several kilometres away—a needless tragedy that would not have occurred if the municipality had fulfilled its obligations. The DA extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

The SAHRC has confirmed that the municipality is in violation of basic human rights and will conduct follow-up actions to ensure compliance with its findings. The DA welcomes this intervention and supports the commission’s commitment to enforce corrective measures that will help restore dignity and safe water access to residents.

A preliminary report on the water situation across Free State municipalities has already been released, with a comprehensive report expected soon. The DA will continue to press for action to ensure that the residents of Maluti-a-Phofung receive the essential services they deserve. The DA remains unwavering in its fight for the rights of all residents to safe and reliable water services.
