The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ngwathe Local Municipality calls for urgent intervention to restore the Phiritona Town Hall to its former pride. We will immediately engage the Municipal Manager, P.F. Mothamaha, requesting a clear action plan to bring this vital community resource back into use.
The municipality hall in Phiritona currently stands in disrepair after suffering severe damage during riots against foreign shop owners several years ago. The hall is now unusable due to broken doors, windows, and gates, a torn ceiling, and the complete theft of electricity cables and plugs. Once a symbol of community pride, it now stands as a decaying reminder of neglect.
The DA initially wrote to Mr Mothamaha on 12 September, requesting that a restoration plan be implemented without delay. To date, we have not received a response, which is unacceptable given the hall’s potential to generate essential municipal income by hosting weddings, concerts, meetings, and other events.
Neglecting this hall not only robs the community of a significant gathering space but also represents a wasted municipal asset. The DA will follow up with a renewed request and call for a meeting to expedite a practical solution for restoring the hall. We are committed to preserving Phiritona’s community resources and ensuring they serve the people effectively.
