The Democratic Alliance (DA) is deeply concerned by the deteriorating condition of key roads in the Free State, particularly the routes between Excelsior and Winburg, Clocolan and Marquard, Kroonstad and Steynsrus, and Warden and Vrede. These crucial transportation corridors are in a state of disrepair, affecting not only the daily lives of our residents but also the economic activity in surrounding towns
The poor condition of these roads has led to severe consequences for our local businesses and agriculture. Farmers are facing unprecedented challenges as they struggle to transport goods efficiently. The road between Excelsior and Winburg, which has not been properly maintained in over a decade, has forced farmers to undertake temporary fixes themselves. This solution is no longer feasible due to ongoing neglect, and the few contractors available are charging up to 25% more to transport their goods, adding a significant financial burden to our agricultural community.
The impact extends beyond agriculture. Emergency services are unable to use these roads effectively, which poses a serious risk to public safety. Additionally, businesses are grappling with increased transportation costs and logistical delays, directly affecting their operations. For instance, a local guesthouse has reported multiple cancellations as travellers avoid the area due to the poor road conditions.
In response to these urgent issues, the DA will insist on a meeting with the Department of Roads & Transport and Agriculture to establish a clear plan of action. We will also ensure that the committee responsible for roads conducts an official oversight visit to roads in the province. Immediate and decisive action is needed to restore these vital transportation links and support our farmers, workers, and businesses.
