The Democratic Alliance (DA) is alarmed by the deteriorating state of the Free State Athletics Stadium, which was highlighted during a recent oversight visit. We were shocked to discover that the stadium has lost its international accreditation with World Athletics, effective from 31 December 2023. This is a significant setback for our athletes, as any records set at this venue will no longer be recognized on the international stage.
The Free State Athletics Stadium, a crucial provincial asset, is in dire need of maintenance and upgrades. Our inspection revealed several critical issues, including the deteriorating surface of the track, inadequate ablution facilities, outdated timing systems, non-functioning high mast lights, and the poor state of the pavilion. These are just a few of the general maintenance concerns that need urgent attention.
It is deeply disappointing that the provincial government is failing to support our athletes by maintaining a facility that meets international standards. The current neglect is not only an embarrassment but also a barrier to our athletes’ ability to compete at the highest levels.
The DA calls on the MEC of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation And the MEC of COGTA to engage the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality to take immediate action to rectify this situation. We will also be tabling our findings in the relevant committee of the Legislature to push for urgent intervention.
The time to act is now for the sake of our athletes and the future of sports in the Free State.
