In response to DA pressure and a recent media statement regarding the water crisis in Matjhabeng Local Municipality, we welcome the significant development wherein the Matjhabeng Municipality approached the High Court in Bloemfontein for an urgent interdict to halt the impending water restrictions. As a result, the parties have reached an out-of-court settlement and have agreed to arbitration, with the Matjhabeng Community Forum (MCF) included as a party to the proceedings.

Key elements of the court order include referral of all issues related to the bulk water supply and payment obligations to arbitration under the Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa) NPC, with the municipality being obligated to make a monthly payment of R 12 000 000.00 to Vaal Central Water and an additional payment on 26 July 2024. The Matjhabeng Community Forum will be able to make submissions during the arbitration process.

This resolution follows a concerted effort by DA Councillors and the MCF, who joined forces in a community-based approach to engage the Matjhabeng Local Municipality (MLM) and Vaal Central Water (VCW) respectively. Our united front aimed to address the immediate issue of water restrictions and culminated in an urgent application that ensured their participation in the arbitration process.

The DA remains deeply committed to the well-being of Matjhabeng residents and the sustainability of its local economy. We believe that a society-based approach is essential in resolving community issues, and this development underscores our dedication to governing with unity and collaboration. Together with the MCF, we will continue to work towards a reliable and sustainable water supply for all residents of Matjhabeng.
