The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality recently conducted an oversight visit to the Thaba Nchu railway station. Unfortunately, the station is in a state of ruin due to prolonged neglect. Please see the pictures here, here, here and here.

Historically, residents of Thaba Nchu and neighbouring areas relied on trains to travel to Bloemfontein. This mode of transport was not only the cheapest but also accessible and reliable.

However, the situation has drastically changed. Most workers and students now depend on expensive alternative modes of transport. Many feel they are working merely to afford high bus fares, leaving little to improve their lives. Some students have resorted to renting accommodation due to the high cost of commuting.

With the escalating cost of living, there is an urgent need for a variety of affordable transport options. Relying solely on taxis and expensive buses is unsustainable. The current administration’s neglect of infrastructure exacerbates this issue.

The public transport system must be appropriate, safe, and well-maintained. The Local Government has a crucial role in planning cities to be public transport-friendly, ensuring commuter safety, and making transport affordable for the majority.

We will compile a report on the oversight and submit it to DA Members of the Provincial Legislature to ensure that residents of Thaba Nchu are not forgotten. The DA pledges to fight for the revitalisation of the Thaba Nchu railway station, ensuring it becomes a viable and affordable transport option once again. This will significantly ease the financial burden on residents, enabling them to use their earnings to better their lives rather than merely covering transport costs.
