Circular 2/2024 from the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) has finalised the incorporation of Heilbron into Metsimaholo Local Municipality. This decision carries significant implications for both Metsimaholo residents and Heilbron’s community, as a municipality’s primary objective is to provide essential services. Regrettably, this redetermination by the MDB will undoubtedly lead to a continued breakdown in service delivery.

Metsimaholo already grapples with numerous service delivery challenges across Sasolburg, Zamdela, Vaalpark, Deneysville, Oranjeville, and Refenkgotso. The lack of a fleet, inadequate equipment for municipal workers, and the absence of economic benefits for residents exacerbate the situation.

The municipality lacks the financial means to establish a satellite office, let alone staff it adequately. Consequently, it raises questions about the proposed benefits for communities. This appears to be a political manoeuvre by the ANC to secure power in the 2026 Local elections, disregarding past instances where boundary redetermination disadvantaged residents.

We will vehemently oppose this decision as it signals a decline in service standards. Additionally, we will actively challenge the decision through advocacy channels while mobilising community support to ensure service delivery standards are upheld. We urge all residents to cast their votes in the upcoming 2024 National and Provincial Government elections on 29 May.
