The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is facing an unprecedented water crisis in Hennenman, with residents enduring nearly continuous water restrictions due to a combination of factors, including ongoing strike action and questionable management decisions.
Despite the dedicated efforts of residents and businesses to mitigate the impact of the strike by SAMWU, the situation remains dire. Service delivery has been severely compromised, with residents forced to bear the brunt of the crisis. Of particular concern is the management of water leaks, which continue to plague the community unabated.
Water leaks in various areas, including Servaas Greeff Street, Annie Street, Maryna Street, Vredelaan, Slabbert Street, Confido Small Holdings entrance from the R70, and Steyn Street, have been left unattended for far too long. The failure to address these leaks not only exacerbates financial losses for the municipality but also undermines the fundamental right of residents to access clean and reliable water.
Compounding this issue is the inexplicable decision to impose daily water closures by Vaal Central, further exacerbating the hardships faced by residents. These closures occur in the evenings, effectively depriving residents of essential water supply during critical times.
Residents of Hennenman are left to contend with restricted water access almost 24 hours a day, with closures implemented by the municipality during the day to address leaks, followed by additional closures by Vaal Central in the evening. The reasons behind these evening closures remain unclear, raising serious questions about the management of water resources and the municipality’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations to the community.
In light of these pressing concerns, the Democratic Alliance urgently call upon the Matjhabeng Municipality to take action to address the water crisis in Hennenman. Immediate steps must be taken to prioritise the resolution of water leaks, ensure transparent communication with residents, and hold accountable those responsible for managing water resources.
The residents of Hennenman deserve better. We implore the municipality to act swiftly and decisively to restore reliable water supply to the community and provide clarity on the reasons behind the evening water closures imposed by Vaal Central.
